The House of Representatives, in a solemn statement issued on January 15, 2025, expressed deep sorrow at the passing of one of its most esteemed members, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, passed away earlier that day following a brief illness.
Born on December 2, 1965, Rt. Hon. Onanuga was a distinguished public servant and an influential political figure whose commitment to her constituents and the nation was unwavering. First elected to the National Assembly in 2019 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), she immediately began making her mark as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly. In this capacity, she spearheaded initiatives focused on empowering women and enhancing social welfare policies across the country.
Her leadership skills were evident as she was re-elected to the 10th Assembly in 2023. As Deputy Chief Whip, she played a vital role in maintaining legislative order and discipline during parliamentary sittings, earning the respect of both her colleagues and the public. Her dedication to the ideals of governance and her passion for improving the lives of Nigerians were cornerstones of her career.
Affectionately referred to as ‘Ijaya’ her peers, Rep. Onanuga’s legacy is one of exceptional leadership, humility, and a relentless drive to serve her people. Her contribution to Nigeria’s political landscape—particularly in advocating for women’s rights and social development—will forever resonate within the chambers of the National Assembly and the communities she faithfully served.
The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, the Government and people of Ogun State, particularly those in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency, and all members of the National Assembly who mourn the loss of a brilliant and compassionate leader.
While funeral arrangements will be communicated her family at a later time, the memory of her tireless service will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Nigerians.
May Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga rest in eternal peace. Her exemplary life of service will continue to guide and inspire all who follow in her footsteps.
